“Hairspray” began as the John Waters film featuring Ricki Lake, Blondie, and Divine evolving into a Broadway sensation with Tony Award-Winning Harvey Feirstein and finally a hit musical film starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. It tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a large-sized teenage girl, who propels the city of Baltimore in 1962 into a new era of understanding as she seeks her dream and her true love on the American Bandstand twin “The Corny Collins Show.” Followed by a hilarious cast of characters who accompany her in this exciting and comical adventure told through big songs and dances, the show is loaded with nostalgic sixties-style hits and thrilling choreography.
The score contains the exciting “Good Morning Baltimore,” the fashion extravaganza that is “Welcome to the Sixties,” the gospel marvel “I Know Where I’ve Been,” through the title tune “Hairspray,” and the roof shaking “You Can’t Stop the Beat” among many hit tunes.
